The Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District, Mohammed Sani Musa, has appealed to residents of Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State to embrace peace following the recent communal clashes that claimed lives, destroyed property and displaced several families.
In a statement issued on Friday, the lawmaker expressed deep sympathy to families who lost loved ones in the violence and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Musa urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, women, elders and other community stakeholders to remain calm, exercise restraint and reject actions capable of worsening the crisis.
“Violence has never solved our differences; it only deepens wounds, destroys livelihoods and sets back the progress of our people,” the senator said.
He noted that the various ethnic communities in Rafi Local Government Area have coexisted peacefully for generations, sharing markets, farmlands and places of worship, and called on young people to resist provocation and embrace dialogue, patience and the rule of law.
The senator commended the Niger State Government, security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders for their ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy. He, however, urged security agencies to remain impartial and ensure that those responsible for the violence are identified and prosecuted.
Expressing concern over the growing insecurity and threats to lives and property in the area, Musa called on the Federal Government to urgently deploy additional military personnel and other security operatives to Rafi Local Government Area to restore order, protect residents and stabilise affected communities.
According to him, swift intervention is necessary to prevent further escalation of the conflict and possible spillover into neighbouring communities.
He also appealed to all parties involved in the crisis to lay down their arms and support ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace, rebuilding trust and promoting lasting coexistence across the local government area.
