The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, has emphasized the need for sustained road safety sensitisation and orientation programmes for university staff and the general public to promote safer road use and reduce accidents.

Prof. Bunkure made the call on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Special Marshal, Zaria Command, during a courtesy visit to his office.

According to a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor’s Media Aide, Sani Lawal Maqarphy, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that regular road safety awareness campaigns are essential for keeping road users informed about traffic regulations, road signs, vehicle safety requirements and other preventive measures against road crashes and traffic violations.

He commended the FRSC Special Marshal Corps for its commitment to road safety advocacy and community service, assuring the team of the University’s readiness to collaborate with the Corps on initiatives that would benefit staff, students and the wider society.

Prof. Bunkure also praised members of the Special Marshal Corps for their sacrifices and voluntary service, noting that community service remains a vital responsibility of public servants and carries rewards both in this world and the hereafter.

The delegation was led by the Deputy Zonal Coordinator of the FRSC Special Marshal, Dr. S. M. Ahmed Omodara, an Associate Professor of Agricultural Science at the University. Other members of the team included Unit 2 Coordinator, SM Bolanle Adeniyi Oronsaye; Unit 3 Coordinator, SM Babatunde Areo; Unit 5 Coordinator, SM Mustapha Surajo, PhD; and officials from the Zonal Office.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Omodara said the engagement was aimed at introducing the Special Marshal leadership and its activities to the Vice-Chancellor while strengthening the long-standing relationship between the University and the FRSC.

He noted that members of the FRSC Special Marshal Corps have consistently participated in various university activities over the years, adding that their operations are voluntary and focused on promoting road safety awareness and public enlightenment as a means of giving back to society.

Also speaking, SM Mustapha Surajo explained that the responsibilities of the FRSC extend beyond traffic law enforcement, highlighting the Corps’ efforts in educating motorists, particularly long-distance drivers, on the importance of resting during journeys to prevent fatigue-related accidents.

In recognition of his support for community service and commitment to road safety initiatives, the FRSC Special Marshal Corps conferred an Honorary Membership on Prof. Bunkure.

The Corps expressed confidence that the honour would further strengthen collaboration between the University and the FRSC in advancing road safety awareness and community development programmes.
