Kano Signs N21.29bn Deal to Revamp Tamburawa, Challawa Water Plants

The Kano State Government has signed contracts worth N21.29 billion with construction giants CGC and CCECC for the comprehensive rehabilitation of major water treatment facilities across the state.

The Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dahir Hashim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano.

According to him, the contracts cover the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa, Challawa, and Goron Dutse water treatment facilities as part of the government’s efforts to restore efficient water supply to millions of residents.

Hashim explained that CGC secured a N9.9 billion contract for the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, while CCECC was awarded N11.39 billion for the rehabilitation of the Challawa and Goron Dutse facilities.

He noted that the intervention followed the approval of the State Executive Council under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The commissioner described the project as a major step toward addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges affecting water distribution across the state.

“Today, I formally signed major contracts with CGC and CCECC for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants,” he said.

“This historic move follows the recent approval of the State Executive Council under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Abba K. Yusuf, aimed at revitalizing our state’s distribution network and ending longstanding infrastructure challenges.”

Hashim revealed that the state’s combined water production capacity of 370 million litres per day had significantly declined due to infrastructural damage and poor performance of the treatment plants.

He explained that the Tamburawa facility is currently operating at only 27 per cent capacity due to flood damage, while the Challawa plant is delivering less than 30 per cent of its installed capacity.

“With ₦9.9 billion awarded to CGC for Tamburawa and ₦11.39 billion to CCECC for the Challawa and Goron Dutse facilities, we are taking decisive action to reclaim our combined 370 million litre daily design capacity,” he stated.

The commissioner urged the contractors to ensure quality execution of the projects within the stipulated eight-month completion period.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to providing sustainable public infrastructure and improving access to safe and potable water across Kano metropolis and surrounding communities.

“This administration remains fully committed to sustainable public infrastructure, ensuring that safe, potable water reaches every metropolitan household and surrounding community,” Hashim added.
