The Federal Government has unveiled the Energise Commercialisation Now (ECoN) initiative, describing it as a people-centred and non-political programme aimed at bridging the gap between research, innovation, and commercialisation in Nigeria.
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, made this known while briefing journalists ahead of the programme’s national launch in Kano. He explained that the initiative is designed to connect inventors, researchers, and investors through a structured and transparent platform.
According to Udeh, a key feature of the programme is a digital dashboard where verified research outputs and innovations will be uploaded and rigorously assessed for credibility. “The platform will allow investors, including global venture capitalists, to identify and fund viable projects with confidence,” he said.
He noted that Kano was selected as the host city due to its strategic importance as a commercial hub and the strong support received from critical stakeholders. These include the First Lady of Nigeria, the Northwest Governors Forum, and the Kano State Government, all of whom contributed funding, logistics, and institutional backing.
Udeh emphasized that the platform would only showcase thoroughly evaluated and bankable innovations, a move he said would boost investor confidence and unlock funding opportunities within Nigeria’s science and technology ecosystem.
“This is the beginning of a transformative journey. We are committed to ensuring that this initiative grows into a sustainable platform that supports innovation-driven development,” the minister stated.
He added that several federal agencies are actively participating in the initiative, particularly those focused on raw materials research, technology incubation, and converting ideas into practical solutions.
The event has already attracted widespread participation, with delegations from across the Northwest arriving in Kano to set up exhibition pavilions.
National stakeholders are also expected as the programme approaches its official launch.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, described the initiative as a landmark project with the potential to redefine Nigeria’s economic future.
“The launch of ECoN in Kano presents a unique opportunity to transform how Nigeria approaches research, innovation, and local content development,” Waiya said.
He further highlighted the programme’s importance for youth empowerment, noting that it would help harness the potential of Nigeria’s growing youth population, create jobs, and stimulate sustainable economic growth.
Waiya expressed optimism that the initiative would open new pathways for innovation-driven enterprise and long-term national development.
