More than three decades after a Nigerian leader last paid a state visit to the United Kingdom, President Bola Tinubu is set to make history with a landmark reception at Windsor Castle. The previous visit in 1989 saw military president Ibrahim Babangida hosted by Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. This time, Tinubu will be received by Charles III and Camilla—becoming the first Nigerian leader hosted at Windsor, as past meetings took place at Buckingham Palace.
Tinubu arrives as leader of Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and a key British trade partner.
Bilateral ties strengthened in November 2024 with a Strategic Partnership built on six pillars, including economic growth, security cooperation, migration management, international collaboration, development reforms, and people-to-people links.
While both nations share deep historical ties, the visit focuses on the future—expanding trade, investment, energy cooperation, anti-corruption efforts, environmental sustainability, and humanitarian support.
Tinubu continues to promote Nigeria as open for business, highlighting reforms launched in 2023 to stabilize the economy and improve the investment climate.
Energy is central to discussions, as Nigeria holds Africa’s largest gas reserves and the UK remains a major petroleum economy, creating opportunities in energy security and clean transition financing.
The President will also engage the Nigerian diaspora and advance defence cooperation following recent security dialogues.
This marks Tinubu’s fourth major European engagement after visits to Germany, France, and Turkey. Nigeria’s leadership across Africa—including work with the African Union, security in the Gulf of Guinea, and democratic support for the Republic of Benin—continues to elevate its global standing.
