Gov. Yusuf Inaugurates Sickle Cell Centre, Infectious Disease Lab, Distributes 3,000 BP Monitors in Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Sickle Cell Centre at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, in a major step towards improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to specialized medical services in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Governor Yusuf said the new centre would significantly strengthen the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of sickle cell disease, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare for the people of Kano.

He noted that the facility reflects the government’s sustained investment in the health sector and its determination to improve the well-being of residents through modern and accessible healthcare services.

“The establishment of this centre demonstrates our resolve to ensure that people living with sickle cell disease receive quality medical care and support,” the governor said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described the project as another milestone in the state’s efforts to improve the lives of people affected by sickle cell disease.

He said the present administration had continued to revitalize government-owned health facilities since assuming office, with the goal of expanding access to efficient and affordable healthcare services across Kano State.

As part of the event, Governor Yusuf also distributed 3,000 blood pressure monitoring devices free of charge to members of the public to promote regular blood pressure checks and encourage the early detection and effective management of hypertension.

In another significant development, the governor inaugurated the Kano State Infectious Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, described as the first state-owned facility of its kind in Nigeria.

According to Yusuf, the laboratory will strengthen disease surveillance, enhance research capabilities and improve the state’s response to infectious disease outbreaks.

He expressed confidence that the facility would significantly boost Kano’s capacity for early detection and rapid response to public health emergencies, thereby improving disease control and safeguarding the health of residents.
