The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received 708 stranded Nigerians evacuated from Niamey, Niger Republic.
The returnees arrived at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, where they were received, documented, and profiled by government officials.
Speaking to journalists, NEMA Kano Head of Operations, Dr. Nura Abdullahi, said the evacuees comprised 292 male adults and children and 416 female adults and children from several states across Nigeria.
“The evacuation was coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria,” Abdullahi said. “They have been provided with food, temporary shelter, and essential relief materials.”
He added, “They have been given blankets, mosquito nets, and dignity kits containing toiletries, wrappers, sanitary pads, and other essentials.”
Medical teams from the Nigerian Red Cross Society treated sick returnees, while critical cases were referred to hospitals.
Abdullahi urged youths to avoid unsafe migration. “Young Nigerians should not risk their lives seeking opportunities abroad without proper arrangements,” he warned.
Also speaking, Kano Field Coordinator of the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Hajiya Luba Liman, described the mission as a “whole-of-government approach.”
“This is a voluntary return. Many could not afford the journey home, so the government arranged their evacuation,” she said, noting collaboration with the Nigerian Embassy in Niamey.
Officials from NCFRMI, the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigeria Immigration Service were present to receive the evacuees.
