The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, the founding Editor of Newswatch magazine.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Kano by his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Mumed, Senator Mark described the late Mohammed as an outstanding journalist, a trailblazing media professional and a courageous advocate of truth whose contributions significantly advanced investigative journalism in Nigeria.

According to him, Yakubu Mohammed was part of an exceptional generation of journalists whose dedication to truth, fairness and professionalism helped shape modern Nigerian journalism and strengthened the country’s democratic culture.

“Yakubu Mohammed was not just a journalist; he was an institution. As the founding Editor of Newswatch magazine, he played a historic role in redefining investigative reporting and in setting high professional standards for the media in Nigeria.

His courage, integrity and unwavering commitment to the truth will remain a benchmark for generations to come,” Senator Mark said.

He noted that Nigeria has lost a revered media icon whose work was driven by patriotism and a deep sense of responsibility to society.

Senator Mark further lamented that Mohammed’s death, coming just weeks after the passing of another Newswatch legend, Dan Agbese, represents another significant blow to the Fourth Estate of the Realm.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Mohammed family, the management and staff of Newswatch magazine, the Nigerian media community and all those impacted by the late journalist’s life and work.

Senator Mark also prayed for the peaceful repose of Mohammed’s soul and for God to grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
“May his enduring legacy of fearless journalism, professionalism and service to the nation continue to inspire the media and the younger generation,” he added.
