KANFEST 2025: Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Rekindles Kano’s Cultural Flame and the Majesty of the Durbar

Under the radiant Kano sun, a familiar rhythm returned the drumming of culture, the colours of tradition, and the pulse of a people rediscovering their pride. The 2025 edition of KANFEST, the Kano Festival of Arts and Culture, known locally as Kalankuwa unfolded at the Kano Trade Fair Complex, reviving a celebration that connects past glory with modern creativity.

At the heart of it all stood Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a leader determined to breathe new life into Kano’s heritage. In his declaration opening the three-day event, the Governor directed the four Emirs of the state to stage the annual Durbar a grand display of royal horsemanship that has defined Kano’s identity for centuries. His message was clear ,culture must not only be remembered but lived, preserved, and passed on.

“Kano is deeply rooted in history, arts, culture, and heritage,” the Governor said with conviction. “For centuries, our city has stood as a centre of learning, commerce, creativity, and civilisation. The craftsmanship of our people, the richness of our traditions, and the resilience of our forefathers are what made Kano the pride of the Sudan region and a reference point on Africa’s map.”

Kano’s Durbar, one of Africa’s oldest cultural spectacles, has long symbolized royal prestige, communal unity, and artistic expression. With the Governor’s directive, the gallant horsemen and regal processions that once filled the ancient city’s streets are set to reclaim their stage not merely as a tourist attraction, but as a living testament to a people’s soul.

Beyond its pageantry, KANFEST 2025 carries a deeper vision. The festival aims to showcase the state’s creative industries, empower young artists, and create global partnerships that place Kano firmly on the world’s cultural map. It’s a bridge between heritage and innovation a reminder that tradition can coexist with progress.

Governor Yusuf’s administration has made arts, culture, and tourism central to its development strategy, seeing them as tools for social cohesion, youth engagement, and economic diversification.
