The Kano State Police Command has announced a series of security measures,
including a temporary restriction of movement, ahead of the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The measures, according to the Command, are part of resolutions reached at the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) strategic meeting held on June 17, aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral process.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, directed the full implementation of a comprehensive election security framework developed jointly by all ICCES member agencies.
As part of the guidelines, the Police announced a total restriction of vehicular and pedestrian movement within Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on election day. The restriction, however, will not apply to INEC officials, accredited election observers, security personnel, emergency responders, and duly identified media practitioners carrying out official duties.
The Command disclosed that adequate security personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and other ICCES agencies have been deployed to polling units, collation centres, INEC offices and other critical infrastructure across the two local government areas.
Voters were urged to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with electoral regulations. The Police emphasized that only eligible voters with valid voter identification and those within designated polling unit areas would be granted access during voting hours.
The statement further warned against campaign activities near polling centres, noting that campaigning, canvassing for votes and displaying political party insignia within 300 metres of polling units remain prohibited under electoral laws.
The Command also reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on electoral offences, including vote buying, vote selling, ballot box snatching, voter intimidation and the spread of fake news or misinformation.
“Anyone found engaging in any form of electoral malpractice will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022,” the statement warned.
To safeguard the integrity of the election, security agencies have placed all electoral materials, INEC personnel and collation centres under heightened protection before, during and after the poll.
Residents were encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities, threats or breaches of peace to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines. The Police added that intelligence-sharing mechanisms among ICCES agencies had been activated to facilitate rapid response to security concerns.
The Kano State Police Command assured residents of Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Federal Constituency of adequate and impartial security throughout the electoral process, stressing that the security situation across the state remains calm and stable.
The Command appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to abide by electoral guidelines and maintain peace, while encouraging eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic responsibility without fear of intimidation.
