Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Legacy Group in Kano State have put forward Murtala Sule Garo as their preferred nominee for the position of Deputy Governor, following recent political developments in the state.
The move comes after the resignation of former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who declined to defect to the APC alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Magaji Umar Gwammaja, a key figure within the APC Legacy Group, disclosed that the decision was reached after a marathon meeting of stakeholders that extended into the early hours of the day.
According to him, the group submitted a shortlist of three candidates to Governor Yusuf for consideration. The nominees include Murtala Sule Garo, Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.
Gwammaja explained that the selection process involved extensive deliberations on the experience, competence, and political track records of the nominees. At the end of the discussions, the stakeholders reportedly settled on Garo as their preferred candidate.
Garo is a seasoned administrator who previously served as a Local Government Chairman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).
Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi was also considered for the role, with a résumé that includes serving as Managing Director of the Urban Development Bank of Nigeria (UDBN), Managing Director of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), Commissioner, and Secretary to the State Government. He currently heads the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority.
Similarly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum brings significant legislative experience, having served three terms in the Kano State House of Assembly representing Rano Constituency, including a tenure as Speaker. He is currently in his second term as a member of the House of Representatives, representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency.
The statement further noted that Garo will undergo security screening and profiling by relevant authorities in Abuja. Upon completion, Governor Yusuf is expected to consult with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before forwarding the nominee to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional provisions.
