The Kano State Government has graduated and empowered 2,260 youths trained across various entrepreneurship and vocational institutes in the state, as part of efforts to boost youth empowerment and job creation.
Speaking at the event at government house Kano,Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the graduation as a new beginning for the beneficiaries, aimed at making them self-reliant and productive contributors to the state’s economy.
He said the revival of 26 moribund entrepreneurship and vocational institutes demonstrated his administration’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of young men and women in the state.
The governor explained that the beneficiaries were trained in diverse fields, including driving, informatics, livestock management, fisheries, film and creative arts, poultry production, and development journalism, among others.
According to him, the programme was designed to equip youths with practical and marketable skills to reduce unemployment and poverty.
Governor Yusuf announced the provision of starter packs to enable the graduates to establish their businesses, adding that each beneficiary would also receive a cash grant of ₦50,000, while graduates of the driving institute would receive ₦100,000 due to the capital-intensive nature of their trade.
He further disclosed that his administration targets training 50,000 youths in various vocational skills to promote self-reliance.
Touching on education, the governor said his administration had cleared over ₦1.9 billion in unpaid tuition fees owed to Cypros, allowing students to access their results, while announcing automatic employment for Cypros graduates in medicine and engineering.
He urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the empowerment, as the event attracted government officials, traditional rulers, development partners, and families of the graduates.
