A grand civic reception was held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in honour of retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Usaini Gumel, celebrating three decades of distinguished service to Nigeria.

The event took place at the Ali Sa’adu Birnin Kudu Conference Hall of Jigawa State College of Education, Gumel, drawing dignitaries from across the country to Gumel, Jigawa State.

Family members, senior security officials, traditional leaders and political figures gathered to recognise the former police chief’s career defined by professionalism, integrity and innovation.

Among the highlights of Gumel’s service were pioneering community-policing initiatives, the rehabilitation of more than 700 at-risk youths in Kano, and the establishment of a technology-driven police division at Dala Hills that transformed a former crime hotspot into a security hub.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, who served as Special Guest of Honour, praised the retired DIG’s legacy of discipline and sacrifice.

“Public service at this level is not merely about holding office; it is about commitment to protecting lives and preserving peace,” the governor said. “DIG Gumel’s professionalism and leadership strengthened intelligence-led policing and community safety across Nigeria.”

He described the occasion as a moment of collective pride for the Gumel Emirate and commended the officer’s family for instilling values that shaped his career.

In an emotional address, Gumel reflected on his journey through the Nigeria Police Force, describing policing as a calling rooted in faith and integrity.

“Titles will change and positions will evolve, but values must remain constant,” he said.

“Saving lives and rebuilding communities remain the most meaningful parts of my service.”

He recounted key assignments in Sokoto State, Kano State, and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as international peacekeeping roles with the United Nations Mission in Liberia and regional security work under ECOWAS.

Delivering the ceremonial citation, Justice Aliyu Babandi Abubakar Gumel described the retiree as “a disciplined officer and ethical leader whose career advanced national and regional security.”

Traditional recognition came from the Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, while goodwill messages were also conveyed on behalf of Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State.

The celebration marked not just retirement, but a legacy of service, leadership and community transformation.
