The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the massive review and upgrade of the Kano–Kongolom Road project at a total cost of ₦334 billion.

The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council and is expected to significantly improve transportation infrastructure and economic activities across the North-West region.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Governor Yusuf described the decision as a historic milestone that will transform the road network in Kano and reinforce the state’s status as a major commercial and logistics hub in Northern Nigeria.

According to him, the redesigned project will cover 132 kilometres and will be constructed as a modern three-lane concrete carriageway equipped with solar-powered street lights and advanced CCTV surveillance systems to enhance security and road safety.

“The approval of this project marks a historic breakthrough for our state. It will significantly transform our road network and reposition Kano as the commercial and logistics heartbeat of Northern Nigeria,” the governor said.

He explained that the Kano–Kongolom corridor connects Kano State with Jigawa State and Katsina State, making it one of the most strategic economic routes in the North-West and a critical gateway for trade, agriculture and industrial growth.

“This project will open new economic frontiers for our farmers, traders and transporters, while drastically reducing travel time and improving safety for road users,” Yusuf stated.

The governor also commended the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for championing quality infrastructure delivery and ensuring the Kano project received priority attention at the federal level.

Governor Yusuf assured that the Kano State Government would provide full cooperation and an enabling environment for contractors to guarantee smooth execution and timely completion of the project.

“We will continue to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure that this project is delivered efficiently and that Kano citizens reap the full benefits,” he added.

He further noted that beyond improving transportation, the road project will create employment opportunities, stimulate investment and strengthen Kano’s position as a regional commercial powerhouse.

“This is the result of our Kano First Agenda working in synergy with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the governor affirmed.
