Residents of Kano State have commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his decision to resign from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), describing the move as a turning point for political independence and development in the state.

Speaking with Voice of Nigeria (VON) in Kano, Alhaji Abubakar Isa of Unguwar Wanbai, Gwale Local Government Area, said the governor’s resignation would allow him to focus fully on governance without interference.

“This decision will enable the governor to concentrate on delivering his campaign promises without the influence of any godfather,” Isa said. “He will now be free to appoint commissioners, special advisers and heads of agencies based purely on merit.”

Similarly, Musa Ibrahim of Shagari Quarters noted that Governor Yusuf now appears more independent in carrying out his democratic mandate.
“For the first time, the governor looks truly independent,” Ibrahim said. “This is the best thing that has happened to the political growth of Kano State.”

Legal practitioner Barrister Muhuyi Magaji described the resignation as a demonstration of political maturity, saying it would open doors to meaningful political and developmental reforms.

“By leaving the NNPP, the governor can now pursue development plans without undue interference,” Magaji said. “This decision will help restructure Kano’s political landscape and propel the state to greater heights.”

Malama Hadiza Mohammed of Hotoro Quarters said the development has already reshaped political expectations in the state, particularly regarding federal support.
“The governor has shown that Kano’s interest comes first,” she said. “If he aligns with the APC, it could attract federal appointments and projects that will benefit the people.”

An academic, Dr. Abubakar Salihu of the Department of Public Administration, Bayero University Kano, also praised the governor’s decision, calling it a positive development for Kano’s political future.
“This is one of the best things that has happened to the political growth of Kano,” Dr. Salihu said. “If Governor Yusuf aligns with the APC, the state could gain improved access to federally funded infrastructure, better budgetary allocations and strategic national appointments.”

According to him, such political alignment has historically translated into accelerated development in areas such as road construction, water supply and security across several states.
Mr. Innocent Okafor of Sabon Gari, Fagge Local Government Area, lauded the governor for leaving the NNPP without political conflict.
“Governor Yusuf showed uncommon political maturity,” Okafor said.

“He recognised that aligning with the centre would better serve the state, and he did so without rancour. That is commendable.”

Also speaking, Kabiru Musa from Bunkure Local Government praised the governor’s resignation and his potential move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing visible federal projects in his area.

“We are already seeing the impact of federal interventions in agriculture and education,” Musa said. “This decision is truly the best thing that has happened to Kano State.”

Voice of Nigeria reports that Governor Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP was accompanied by 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
