A political analyst, Dr. Abubakar Salihu of the Department of Public Administration, Bayero University, Kano, has commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for resigning from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), describing the move as a positive turning point for Kano State’s political development.
Speaking with Communitypen in Kano on Friday, Salihu said the governor’s decision represents one of the most significant developments in the state’s recent political history.
According to him, if Governor Yusuf eventually aligns with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kano State could benefit from improved access to federally funded infrastructure projects, stronger bargaining power in national budgetary allocations, and increased representation of Kano elites in key federal institutions.
Salihu noted that such alignment could lead to a rise in both state and federal government projects within and outside Kano, without undue interference from political godfathers.
He explained that, within the context of Nigerian federal politics, political alignment with the ruling party at the centre often translates into tangible developmental benefits. He cited past examples where states experienced accelerated development through road construction, water supply projects, and enhanced security presence after aligning with the federal government.
The academic described Governor Yusuf’s decision as pragmatic, adding that it could enhance both his political influence and the state’s overall developmental prospects.
The governor’s resignation from the NNPP was accompanied by the exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
