The Kano State Government has completed and officially handed over a major drainage project in Toranke town, Ajingi Local Government Area, bringing lasting relief to a community long plagued by destructive flooding.
The development was announced on Friday by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, who said the project was carried out with the approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of the administration’s commitment to protecting lives, property and vital infrastructure across the state.
Dr. Hashim explained that Toranke had, for decades, suffered from seasonal flooding that resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents and severe economic hardship, especially for farmers whose farmlands were repeatedly destroyed.
He noted that the completion of the drainage project has marked a turning point for the community, as recent heavy rainfall passed without any recorded casualties or damage to property.
Describing the achievement as a major milestone, the commissioner said the project demonstrated the state government’s proactive approach to addressing climate-related challenges through durable and sustainable infrastructure.
“The Toranke drainage project reflects our determination to safeguard communities, protect livelihoods and build resilience against environmental threats,” Dr. Hashim said.
He added that the intervention goes beyond flood control, as it was designed to strengthen environmental resilience and support long-term socio-economic development.
During the handover, residents were sensitised on the need to properly maintain the drainage channels. The commissioner urged the community to avoid dumping refuse into waterways, blocking drainage routes or erecting structures that could obstruct the free flow of water.
Dr. Hashim also disclosed that the project includes a stormwater harvesting system to support irrigation farming, protect farmlands from erosion and enhance agricultural productivity, thereby contributing to improved food security.
Residents of Toranke expressed satisfaction with the quality of the project and commended the Kano State Government for involving the community from the planning stage to completion. In appreciation, the rehabilitated road was named Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf Street in honour of the governor.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to community participation as a key pillar in the implementation of sustainable development projects across Kano State.
