The Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been honoured with the 2025 Nigeria Excellence Award in Public Service (NEAPS) in recognition of his administration’s strides in education, healthcare, agriculture, urban renewal, infrastructure, and social welfare.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who described the honour as “a clear endorsement of Governor Yusuf’s focused and people-oriented leadership.”

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf’s administration has recorded “major achievements across key sectors,” especially in education where the government has embarked on massive school rehabilitation, large-scale teacher recruitment and improved funding for public schools.

“In education, we made a commitment to rebuild what was neglected, and we are seeing the results,” the governor was quoted as saying.

The health sector has also witnessed significant transformation with the renovation of primary healthcare centres, upgrades of general hospitals and wider access to quality medical services. “Health is the backbone of development, and we have prioritised it accordingly,” Yusuf added.

On agriculture, the administration has rolled out multiple farmer-support programmes, ensured timely distribution of inputs and strengthened extension services to boost productivity for thousands of farmers.

Agriculture, Yusuf said, “remains a lifeline for our people, and we will continue to support our farmers with every resource available.”

Kano is also undergoing a major urban renewal initiative aimed at restoring its status as a modern and liveable metropolis. “Our vision is to rebuild Kano into a city that works for everyone,” the governor noted.

Governor Yusuf received the NEAPS award alongside the governors of Zamfara, Bauchi, Adamawa, Enugu and Akwa Ibom States.

The ceremony, organised by the Nigeria Excellence Award in Public Service in partnership with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), saw President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represented by the SGF, Senator George Akume.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of NEAPS, Justice Mary Odili (rtd.), presided over the event.

Other recipients included the Chairman of the NDLEA, Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.), as well as the heads of the EFCC, NFIU, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, the Minister of Aviation, the Minister of Finance and the Director-General of NEMA.

Governor Yusuf dedicated the award to the people of Kano State, saying:
“This honour belongs to the people of Kano. It strengthens our resolve to continue delivering people-centred governance and sustainable development.”
