“We Will prioritise Journalists Welfare” – Governor Yusuf Reaffirms Media Support

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare and working environment of journalists in the state.

The governor made the declaration on Sunday during a two-day retreat organised for the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel in Kaduna.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Government House Kano, Usman Gwadabe, Governor Yusuf represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farooq Ibrahim—said his administration would continue to maintain a cordial and transparent relationship with the media.

“We are committed to ensuring adequate welfare and a conducive working atmosphere for journalists in Kano,” he said.
“Our partnership with the media should be objective and guided by the public interest, not competition.”

He urged journalists to uphold ethical standards, assuring that the government would remain open and accessible in communicating its policies.

“We appeal to practising journalists to maintain the ethics of the profession. This government will continue to be open and transparent in sharing its mission and vision with the public,” he added.

Governor Yusuf also appreciated the media for supporting his administration’s programmes and thanked Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for showing concern over security challenges in the North.

“Kano will continue to adopt sound and proactive strategies to prevent insecurity in the state,” he assured.

Representing the Kaduna State Governor, the state’s Commissioner of Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, commended Kano State for choosing Kaduna as host and emphasized cooperation.

“We appreciate the Kano State Government for hosting this important retreat here. Both states must continue working together to deliver the dividends of democracy,” he said.

Kano Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the retreat was aimed at enhancing professional capacity and strengthening media–government relations.

Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, urged journalists to sustain support for the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Murtala Adewale, expressed gratitude to the state government for hosting the retreat outside Kano.

“This is the first time in our history that such a retreat is being held outside the state, and we sincerely appreciate the gesture,” he said.

Highlights of the retreat included morning workouts, interactive sessions with government officials, certificate presentations, and five paper presentations. Prof. Sule Yau Sule delivered the lead paper titled “Fostering Relationship Between Journalists and Government: Ethical Practice as a Sacrosanct Element.”

Other sessions focused on mental health for journalists under pressure, legal boundaries in reporting, artificial intelligence in media, and emerging opportunities in digital journalism.
