The political landscape in Kano witnessed a major shift on Monday as prominent figures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) gathered for the formal defection of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in a move seen as a boost to opposition politics.

A high-powered delegation led by former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, arrived in Kano and proceeded to Miller Road, Kwankwaso’s residence, where final arrangements were made ahead of the announcement. The delegation included notable politicians such as Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Dino Melaye, John Odigie-Oyegun, and Emeka Ihedioha.
They were received at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport by former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, alongside party supporters, amid heightened security across the city.

Speaking at the event, Mark described Kwankwaso’s entry into the ADC as a turning point. “This is a defining moment for our party and Nigeria’s democracy. It reflects the urgent need for a united opposition capable of providing credible alternatives,” he said.

Kwankwaso, known for his strong grassroots base through the Kwankwasiyya movement, attracted large crowds of supporters who thronged the venue.
In his remarks, Kwankwaso confirmed his membership of the party, declaring, “I am now a bona fide member of the ADC, and together, we will work towards victory in 2027.”

He urged his supporters to join the party, adding, “I call on all our followers to register with the ADC and actively participate in the democratic process.”

Political analysts believe the defection could reshape the opposition’s strength against the ruling APC ahead of future elections.
