In what appears to be a growing economic debate over the future of Nigeria’s industrial landscape, One Kano Agenda, a socio-political advocacy group, has accused the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) of plotting to undermine the business interests of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Kano, the group’s Director-General, Ambassador Abbas Abdullahi Yakasai, expressed deep concern over what he described as deliberate attempts by PENGASSAN to frustrate Dangote’s investments in the oil and gas sector.
According to Yakasai, Dangote’s industrial vision epitomized by the world-class Dangote Refinery has been a game-changer for Nigeria’s economy, creating thousands of jobs, strengthening local production, and reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign imports.
“It is unfortunate that instead of supporting such a monumental achievement, certain interests are bent on crippling the operations of the refinery, which would in turn hurt the Nigerian economy,” he lamented.
Yakasai therefore urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and call PENGASSAN to order before the situation escalates into a full-blown industrial conflict that could damage investor confidence in the country.
The One Kano Agenda group also commended Vice President Kashim Shettima for his unwavering commitment to stabilizing the economy and encouraging industrial growth.
Reaffirming its mission, the group vowed to continue advocating for the progress of Kano State and to stand by all individuals and institutions working for the state’s and Nigeria’s collective prosperity.
“Kano’s development is inseparable from Nigeria’s growth. We will resist any act of sabotage against those who contribute to our shared progress,” Yakasai declared.
With the Dangote Refinery emerging as one of Nigeria’s most ambitious industrial ventures, the controversy underscores the delicate balance between labor interests and the nation’s drive toward economic self-sufficiency.
