The Kano State Government has directed all political appointees seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
This directive was contained in an official circular issued on Tuesday and signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk Ibrahim. The circular warned that any appointee who fails to comply with the order will be disqualified from contesting elective positions.
According to the SSG, the decision aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act (2026) regulating the participation of public office holders in partisan political activities.
“The directive is in line with Section 88 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2026,” the circular stated.
“Political appointees who intend to contest in the forthcoming elections are required to resign or retire, as applicable, on or before Tuesday, 31st March, 2026.”
The government said the measure is designed to strengthen neutrality, accountability, and integrity within the public service while ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants.
The directive has been formally communicated to all ministries, departments, parastatals, and agencies across Kano State for immediate implementation.
Emphasizing strict adherence, the SSG urged all affected officials to comply with laws governing public service conduct.
All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have also been instructed to give the circular the widest possible publicity and ensure full compliance ahead of the election season.
