The Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority has announced the commencement of a test run of newly installed 8-megawatt hydropower turbines at Tiga Dam as part of efforts to boost electricity generation in Kano State.
The exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Kano State Hydropower and Energy Development Company, is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 13, 2026, and is expected to mark a major step in the state’s drive to harness renewable energy from its water resources.
In a public announcement, the Managing Director of the authority, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, said the test run is aimed at assessing the operational efficiency of the turbines installed at the hydroelectric generation facility located at the dam.
According to the statement, engineers will temporarily close the Left Side and River Bed outlets of the dam to enable the technical exercise to take place.
“The closure of these outlets will be fully compensated by controlled water discharge through the newly activated 8-megawatt turbines,” Bichi stated.
The authority assured residents and other water users that the temporary shutdown of the outlets would not lead to water shortages in downstream communities.
It also urged farmers, fishermen and communities living along the river course to remain vigilant during the testing period and report any unusual developments.
“We appeal to all water users and residents along the river to promptly report any adverse effects observed during the exercise to the nearest office of the authority,” the statement added.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to responsible water resource management while ensuring that communities continue to benefit from its operations during the testing phase of the hydropower project.
