The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has denied reports that large-scale defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are being orchestrated by the party’s state or national leadership, saying the party remains united and focused on its agenda.
State Chairman Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa told journalists on Monday that the NNPP is firmly committed to its political vision for Kano and Nigeria, with a continued emphasis on people-centred governance and priorities such as education, agriculture and economic empowerment. He urged any members considering leaving to reconsider and remain loyal to what he described as a party founded on social justice and inclusive development.
Dungurawa also rejected claims of internal divisions or attempts by some officials to drive a wedge between Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and NNPP national leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing such reports as baseless and intended to undermine party cohesion.
Despite the NNPP’s position, a number of members have recently moved to the APC. Named defectors include Umar Bala Haruna, an aide to Governor Yusuf, and Muhammad Hussaini, the NNPP organising secretary for Bichi Ward; Hussaini said the leadership of Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin influenced his decision to switch parties.
The NNPP leadership maintained that these individual departures do not represent the party’s stance and reiterated its determination to stay united ahead of forthcoming political contests in the state
